Director

Director was my next obsession after learning Flash reasonably well and creating the audio mixer. I wanted to have more controls for playing back files or creating beats. Here are three audio interfaces -- one designed to play audio loops, one usable as a beat or rhythmic grid, and one which gives a different version of a beat grid.

Note: All these applications are PC only.

Audio Mixer 2.0 -- A loop-based 8-channel wave player with volume, pan, and modulation controls

Beatbox -- Six channels of beats (16 beat-measure); two additional channels for long sounds; adjustable playback parameters; more than 80 beat and other sounds; and the ability to save and load patterns.

Eightbox -- Eight channels, eight beats; independently-controllable playback settings per channel; redesigned controls. This was an experiment more than anything, done after the Beatbox one was completed.

As I explored and experimented with audio, I also explored the possibilities available for controlling graphics. This led to the creation of the two graphics mixers -- one for manipulating photographs, and one for controlling shapes and lines.

I had intentions of bringing the two areas together in my next Director project, and create a dual-interface audio player / visualizer, with lots more functionality and controls. Such a mixer could certainly be created in Director (or Flash) using a combination of the ideas and materials found in these projects, with some tweaking and honing, and a lot more exploration of coding. However, I had just found a whole new program / paradigm to play with ... one that was to completely change the possibilities I saw ... and one I sorely wish I had known about before!

Check out the Max / MSP / Jitter main page for a telling comparison between the programming paradigms. If you like to experiment with media and design your own interfaces, that's where you want to be, believe me.
